Style Parade holiday edition

I know I'm about a week late with this post, with NYE being tomorrow and all. But...this is what I wore Christmas day. Festive, ladylike and a little vintage prep. The day was very chilly so I wore my thick gray tights. I got this skirt from the largest Forever 21 store I've ever seen in Chicago. The line detail is actually zipper teeth, making it sort of edgy. I think the fuller skirt also makes it more grown-up and less school girl. I originally bought this tie for Gary, but he said it looked like a girl's tie. What ever that means. So I kept it for me.

Shirt: Express. Skirt: Forever 21; $30. Necktie: JC Penny; $9. Tights: Gap. Hat: Vintage. Starburst ring: Pier 1.

A year in fashion

These are my top 10 favorite looks from 2010. It's funny how 3 of them incorporate my obvious love of black & white and some even have duplicate pieces.

Favorite trends
Shorts/Rompers
Fedoras
Whimsical hosiery
Stripes
Statement necklaces
Flats
Riding boots
Fabric blooms
Furs

How I've grown
This year I definitely took more risks. I feel that the further I get from environments that stress the need to conform to an agreed upon definition of "normal" (ie; high school), the more I feel free to be me. I know that sounds silly. Why waste your precious life trying to please others or worry about fitting it? I'll chalk it up to human nature. Fashion is my thing. I dress for me and that makes me feel good. Because life is a fashion show. There. I said it.

What's next?
I spent all yesterday reorganizing my office. I was chatting with Gary about how this is part of my Stephanie 2.0 project (Basically I'm trying to modify my natural tendencies toward clutter + overall disorganization) which led to an interesting conversation about cataloging. Do you remember that scene from Clueless where Cher has a computer program for her wardrobe? Yeah, we want to do something like that. Anyway it's a little side project that we may pursue together. Do you do that? Creative team efforts with your significant other? This is new for us.

Favorite things: Ikea

I will never ever ever grow tired of Ikea. I love it! If I could marry it and have it's blue tarp bag babies I would. Can you really beat this awesome typography print for $12? I'm also happy to see they now offer a mini version of the MASKROS pendant. I've always been smitten with it's big brother (or sister, it's kinda feminine with all the flowers) but thought it a bit too large. I think the MIEN stackable boxes are genius for crafts, makeup or jewelry storage. Enjoy!

1. BILD poster; $12
2. FISKEVIK picture holders; $6
3. MASKROS pendant lamp; $50
4. KALLT wall panel; $20
5. IKEA 365+ espresso cup + saucer; $3
6. MIEN stackable storage boxes; $8
7. ANTEN scale; $15

Style Parade 12.27.10

You know that feeling when you leave a store without something that you convinced yourself you definitely don't need...Not for that price...only to find you can't stop thinking about it? That's how I felt about this wool coat. But guess what? Patience paid off and it finally made its way to the clearance section. All I have to do is sew on the extra button cause it was missing one.

After a whole week without sunshine, it was big and bright this morning. I love this big rabbit fur hat. It screams quintessential wintertime.

I jumped on the bandwagon with some sparkly polish. This shade is OPI, It Looks Like Rain, Dear.

Coat: Target; $38. Dress: Target; $18ish. Leggings: Target; $5. Hat: Vintage; $18. Charm bracelet: Delia's/Alloy.

Christmas wrap-up

Christmas memories are always very dear to me and the magic of the holiday doesn't stop with the fact that I'm almost 30. Christmas Eve we went to my parent's house for my mom's amazing lasagna, Lambrusco & mulled cider. Christmas Day we celebrated at my brother-in-law's home, potluck style. I enjoyed everything! So good.

So, what did you get for Christmas?
What was your most treasured gift that you've ever received?

I just wanted to share some of the great gifts I received this year. Some festive bakeware from my mom...
Don't you love all the pretty colors & patterns? Perfect for summer! Also a new table runner & cake server. I love the retro design of the runner. The server features a "high heel" perfect for girly entertaining, and it's also removable for regular use.

I also got these recycled paper recipe cards & soup cook book. I can't wait to start cooking these. The soups are so creative & there's tons of international recipes. My brother's fiance got me this fantastic sewing book. It's great because it has tons of instructional photos.

My inner hostess was swooning over these...Gary's mom got me this serving tray with snack compartments. It totally matches my other stoneware pieces. The numbered wine glasses are from my mom. Of course you know how much I love numbers. Which brings me to this typography print, also from my mom...
I'll be posting a fabulous Style Parade feature tomorrow! Until then, enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Lunch for one.
Meatballs with vodka sauce, basil & mozzarella on rye.
5 days of nonstop rain. It's been just dreadful outside so I've been making cozy little lunches at home & catching up on some light reading. I love eating at our breakfast nook on cold days.

Soft neutrals today - a lacy blouse and a simple waffle knit boyfriend cardigan. Can you tell that I'm in need of a haircut? It's getting incredibly long and has lost it's shape. I've been wearing it up because I just can't deal with it anymore. Maybe I can sneak in an appointment after Christmas.

Beret: Isaac Mizrahi for Target. Cardigan: Target; $24. Lace blouse: Forever 21; $20ish. Oxfords: Blake Scott. Feather necklace: H&M

New desktop toys

pencil sharpener, tape dispenser & vintage perpetual calendar.
A sweet little trio of desk accessories that brings me a little happiness every time I use them. Although I'm left-handed and detest a graphite-smeared palm, I have gone back to my childhood beginnings with the old No. 2. Anyhow, watch how this thing sharpens pencils.

video
This is the sweetest little perpetual calendar that I picked up from an Etsy seller. It's amazing how the days just zoom by when you're not watching. Somehow life slows down when you see the date drop down in front of you.
video
Have you noticed how difficult it is to find refills of Scotch brand tape without the plastic dispensers? This became evident when I saw 5-packs of tape with 5 separate tape dispensers. Why Scotch? Why? Anyway Staples sells just the tape, packaged in cardboard at least (have I mentioned just how much I detest unnecessary, wasteful packaging?) Super long rant later...leads me to purchase a beautifully crafted wood tape dispenser.

DIY recycled birch

I always keep old coffee cans instead of tossing them. You never know when inspiration will spark. I was in the middle of breaking down some cardboard boxes for the trash when this idea came to me.

source
Inspiration. Birch bark. The real deal. But this stuff can get pricey. Craft sites sell these for $17-$22 a piece. Or you can make my faux version for practically nothing. If you want to make a variety of sizes, try using vegetable cans or even gluing 2 stacked ones for a taller vase.

You will need...
coffee or other cans (labels stripped & insides cleaned)
a cardboard box
foam brush
tacky glue
white craft paint
burnt umber craft paint

Instructions:
-Remove the top layer of the cardboard. No need to be careful, just remove in random strips.
-Using your foam brush, cover your coffee can in tacky glue.
-Apply the cardboard strips to the glue covered coffee can. It should look something like this when you're finished:

Tip: Use lots of layers when applying the cardboard strips. The more texture you add the better.
-After the glue is dry (about 10 minutes) apply (1) coat of white paint with your foam brush. Allow another 10 minutes to dry.
-Using a clean brush, dip just the tip in the burnt umber color and apply very thin horizontal lines on top of your white layer. Let dry completely before handling.

All done! There are so many uses for this cute little creation.

Keep the lid and use as a storage container...

Ginger Wars

Are you planning on baking something special for the holidays? Or perhaps you're already wrist-deep in cookie dough. haha. I just had my first delicious bite of panettone (sweet Italian bread with fruit) and I'm in heaven!

My friend Melissa had a gingerbread contest at her work. I love her Star Wars inspired entry! Check out Melissa's blog, An Ode to Baking for some delectable holiday goodness.

Rainy day wrapping

I spoke too soon. More wrapping. (slapping head with palm)

Awesome reindeer silhouette paper - $.80 at Ikea.
Last minute lightning bolt of creativity struck in the form of stenciling directly on the paper. Brilliant.

Five for Friday

I love a good space mystery! Here's the quick + dirty list of my faves for the genre. Although if you haven't seen Serenity, do yourself a favor and watch Firefly first. It's awesome. I promise.
Happy weekend!

Recipe time

Gosh, it's been a while since I've posted a recipe. With the holidays it's incredibly easy to have those extra calories go unnoticed so I've been trying to come up with healthy options for the everyday. Something I should be doing all the time anyway, but sometimes you just want alfredo sauce twice a week, you know?

Anyway we all know fish is healthy and I'm not talking about a fillet-o-fish, McDonalds. Here's my version of a healthy and nutritious fish sandwich. Note: all ingredients are from Trader Joes.

Ingredients
-1 Whole wheat hamburger bun, toasted if desired
calories: 200
total fat: 2.5g
4g of fiber (your diet should consist of 20-30g per day)

-1 Trader Joes brand mahi mahi patty (frozen)
calories: 110
total fat: 5g > 4.5g monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fats (those are the good kind)

-1/4 medium sized avocado, cubed
calories: 50
total fat: 4.5g > 3.5g monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fats
1g of fiber (yay! more fiber)

-1 tbsp of Trader Joes brand tartar sauce with dill & jalapeno
calories: 45
total fat: 4.5g

-lemon juice, to taste

So, that's...
405 calories
16.5g fat, half of which are good fats
5g fiber
Plus all the vitamins, nutrients & health benefits

Not bad, right? Did I mention that fiber also helps fill you up so you eat less?

Instructions (pretty simple considering it's a sandwich)
-Cook fish patty according to directions on package
-Add cooked fish to bun, layer avocado.
-Spread tartar sauce & lemon. Enjoy!

Seasons Greetings from Retroville

Kind of weird. We've been a couple since 1998 and this is our very first Christmas card. I'm not super into sending greeting cards, but I loved this photo so much that it just seemed appropriate. Since the photo had a retro quality to it, I wanted the card to reflect as such, not necessarily those fancy photo cards we have nowadays. I printed 2 cards per 8.5x11" sheet of kraft card stock. Walgreens Photo was having a deal on prints - 50 4x6 prints for $5, which I affixed using some Martha Stewart patterned tape. I spotted these cool air mail envelopes. So much more interesting than plain white, don't you think?

Do you send holiday greetings? Do you like receiving them?

Featured today on weardrobe street style.
That is all. Party on.

Style Parade 12.15.10

There are so many things I love about this ensemble. It's elegant, yet casual. I'm pretty sure I'm going to wear it Christmas Eve. Another thing I love is that it's monochromatic gray, which is still one of my favorites this season.

Isn't this skirt fantastic? It's like a ballgown, but less fussy. I styled it with a plain gray cotton tee and this gorgeous feather collar.

 Twirl, twirl.

Tee: Old Navy. Skirt: Forever 21; $24. Feather collar: Forever 21; $22. Statement ring: Pier 1; $5

Centerpieces. MacGyver style.

Mission: Make 30 pretty centerpieces for cheap.
You have... red plastic cups, wood skewers, tissue paper & tape. Go!

My mom volunteers with The Miss Placentia Pageant, which is part of the Miss America program. As a pageant alumni I couldn't resist an opportunity to help my mom out with crafting the reception centerpieces. The theme is Enchanted, so I thought something girly & whimsical would do the trick. I pulled a little inspiration from my Christmas wrapping. Hey, if you like something what's the harm in repeating it?

Being a scholarship program, it's important that the contestants get as much as possible, so the challenge is making something beautiful for next to nothing. But not to worry, I love a good challenge! The key is to use materials that are inexpensive, common & that you can purchase in bulk. Not only that, but most of the materials used can be reused!
Materials used:
-Plastic red cup (base)
-White tissue paper
-Pink tissue paper
-Wood skewers
-Twine
-Votive candles
-Gold curling ribbon
-Paper doily
-Gold foil paper
-65 lb cream cardstock
-Double-sided tape
