Plans for the backyard

Gary & I have been chatting about household projects lately. First and foremost, the spa. It costs roughly $1,200 a year to maintain. The thing is leaking. We've decided that the spa is a money pit, even a liability when we have children around. It also seems silly to give up most of our yard for something we've never used, especially when we have a heated association pool/spa that's just across the street.

I already got a couple of quotes for the demo. We're looking at starting sometime within the next year, but just to give you an idea here's a rather cheesy digital rendering of our backyard...

After the demo and the wading pool/spa areas are filled with dirt, I'm thinking of covering it with river rocks and stepping stones. Sort of a modern, minimalist space. I'm also thinking the spa area would be a perfect place for fire pit seating! We could go rustic...

Or something a bit more refined...

While the current patio area has bright bursts of colors I'd like to keep the surrounding area very muted, as to not compete with the furniture. I'm loving these olive drab & gray modern spaces...

This looks like a really big backyard, oh the possibilities! I can't wait to read what you end up deciding to do and the final product!
