I don't usually decorate the house for Valentine's Day, but I found myself needing a bright pick-me-up and I literally had these things laying around...

Typography, oh how I love thee...let me count the ways...

1. The "I love you" heart print is from The Love Shop

2. I received this gorgeous illustrated card as a gift with purchase from Eva Juliet. I usually craft Mr. Poli's Valentines so I thought the card would make a cute framed print.

3. The XO were scores from the Michael's dollar bin.

4. The February print is part of a leftover letterpress calendar I purchased a couple years back from Orange Beautiful.

I spruced up the woven vases with some crafted paper hearts & tissue paper flowers. Here's to easy updates!

Style Parade: Snow Bunny edition

So I had this whole plan of bringing lots of furry hats, coats and other super cute winter wear on our snow bunny trip up to Tahoe. Then I realized how much space winter wear takes up in a suitcase and that my luggage would be 1 of 4 in the SUV. I had to make due with just the necessities, which meant 1 hat, 1 coat and lots of black leggings.

I did however upgrade my snow jacket this year and got an incredible deal on this Calvin Klein one. It has the most adorable fur trimmed hood and it's lined with plushy down. So warm.

Joining me on this edition of Style Parade is my friend and fellow snow bunny, Melinda. Aren't her pink wellies adorable?

It's been really dry in Tahoe this year. Can you believe they didn't get any snow this season? It was like arriving in Vermont in White Christmas. So Melinda & dusted off our blue fans and did the Sisters number and behold...Snow!

We took a ride up the mountain in the gondola out of Heavenly Village. The winds were really picking up at that point and it was kind of scary swaying back and forth.

We stopped off at the observation deck to snap a few photos then hiked through the snow for some boozy coffee drinks.

I recently got a haircut. Nothing new, just the same old story. I was chatting with my stylist about drastic changes and how she sends a client home if they request a drastic change if that's not their m.o. I can only imagine what my stylist would do if I walked in next time with this photo of the ever-so-chic Katie Armour...

I've hated every short cut I've had in my life, but perhaps it's because it wasn't short enough, as in pixie cut.

I like Ginnifer Goodwin's version with bangs as well.

Excuse the obsession, but you see for a southern California gal like myself, snow is a novelty - a delight one can only enjoy after a 2 hour minimum car ride. I'll be joining in on the annual snowboarding trip this year. The destination- Lake Tahoe.

But while the mister is swishing down ski runs with friends, I'll be warm + toasty in a nearby chalet, boozy coffee in-hand of course, with my best lady Melinda while we do our best snow bunny impressions. Essentially, looking glamorous in the snow without actually partaking in snow activities. We have some wine tasting planned, a bit of gambling at the nearby casinos and perhaps some ice skating if I can talk someone into it that is.

Personal politics aside I think most of us would agree that freedom and liberty are good things and as American citizens it is those ideals that make this country different from others around the world. Censorship is bad m'kay.

A purple accent wall

Behold! The muted purple accent wall to match the new office chair. The color is Valspar brand "Lilac Gray" 1003-9C. I'm really happy with how it turned out and I attribute that to three things I've learned about painting since I became a homeowner...

1. When considering paint swatches, tape them to a wall in the space and watch how the light affects the color over the duration of the day.

2. Choose your tape wisely. I've completed 2 projects with the Scotch Blue edge lock tape and I'm happy to report that there was virtually no bleeding behind the tape. It also helps to remove the tape before the paint fully dries. (An open letter: I swear 3M Scotch marketing peeps, if you spam me for this post because I name dropped your product I will hurt you)

3. Remove the baseboard caulking with a razor blade prior to painting. It's not fun watching the oil & water don't mix concept happening before your eyes on a freshly painted wall. I found this out the hard way when I painted the black bathroom.

And in case you were wondering...yes I painted around the Eiffel Tower decal. I used tape on the straight edges and free-handed the red. Paint also comes off vinyl pretty easily.

I also mixed up the wall art a bit. The typography prints are from The Love Shop and the illustrations are from The Nebulous Kingdom. I relocated the decorative plate (Home Goods) from the shelving unit to the wall. The vintage stamp print is from Ikea. My original idea was to add two Ribba picture ledges to this wall, but the wall had other plans...behind the drywall is solid metal or concrete. Either way, the drill wasn't going through it.

While I was at it I switched up the display on the top of the bookshelf. I removed the birdcage decal and relocated the books to the lower shelves. I'm loving the simplicity and glam factor of this new vignette.

Um...Have you been to Target lately?

It's like they've been secretly stalking me for months to find out what would look fabulous in my kitchen.

There's other colors in the collection- turquoise and red I think, but you really can't go wrong with black & white. Modern, minimal and warm woods. Target, will you be my valentine?!

Are you growing tired of chevron prints yet? They've been popular for some time now but I really don't find myself bored with the trend. Usually once something hits such a wide market like say Target, it's over. I hope not...although since when I have I cared what design types think?

Pretty much never.

Oh Home Goods, you've been good to me

My local Home Goods is pretty well stocked, but look what I scored at a neighboring store - 5 fantastic finds; 2 of them being things I've been wanting for awhile.

I need more cups like I need a hole in my head, but aren't these fantastic?! Bold graphic quality in a black & white palette- there was no question that these were coming home with me. They had plates & bowls too but I fancied the coffee cups. Set of 4; $8.

I'm one of those guests that hates in when people hide the toilet paper and have been embarrassed on more than one occasion by our own guests having to ask for another roll. Patience paid off- a skinny vintage inspired wire basket. It fits perfectly next to the toilet in the guest bath. Basket; $9

And lastly, a new desk chair for my office that's so fabulous it inspired me to paint a matching accent wall.

As much as I tried to convince myself that I could get by without armrests it just wasn't meant to be with the last Home Goods chair find. I was heading to the checkout with my other items when the stock person put this baby on the floor. I snagged it, feeling very special as other ladies admired it saying "Great chair!"

It's not like I don't have tons of home projects on the to-do list already. But yet here I find myself plotting the next one. Although this project is gonna be a jerk and cut in line.

You see it all started when I found this ridiculously fabulous muted plum chair for my office (I'll be doing introductions a little later) but as I left the store 3 people complimented the color. Around the same time I pinned this Parisian-chic bathroom:

The style is very similar to my office. Clean modern lines with a hint of ornate vintage quality in a black & white palette. This brings me to the project at hand- I have a day off and a stack of purple paint swatches...stay tuned!

We had a fantastic time at the party. The hosts, our friends Alicia & Rob, set up a festive photo booth and a resolution chalkboard.

I have to say that Alicia is quite the hostess. I love how she DIY'd her decorations. It was tinsel galore! Her 2012 banner was very similar to this pin from my NYE inspiration board. haha...we think so similarly- I love it!

It was fun mingling with new people. After we toasted at midnight everyone partook in a crazy dance party.

They had this cool iPad app that works like DJ turn tables. It was great because anyone could cue up a song and mix or "skip the record". So fun!

Happy 2012 everybody.

This is what I wore on New Years Eve. I told you this dress was scandalously short. I was tempted to play it safe and wear tights but I decided that there are only a handful of instances where I feel like I can get away with showing so much leg - Vegas and New Years Eve.

I became totally obsessed with the idea of wearing a black sparkly dress after seeing this video from Mina Tindle. So you can imagine how excited I was when I found this dress on sale at Asos, the last one in my size. It's kismet I tell you. I also love how my earrings look like tiny versions of the Times Square crystal ball.

I'll be posting some of the party pics tomorrow. Our hosts set-up a photo booth...so fun!

Champagne + Strawberries

A decadent + delicious combination.

Last evening I prepared these lovely spreads for the party we'll be attending tonight. The strawberries were surprisingly easy to make.

To make the Champagne & St. Germain jello shots, in a medium saucepan combine 3/4 cup champagne or Prosecco with 1/2 cup water plus 2 tablespoons white sugar. Sprinkle 2 packets of Knox gelatin over the mixture, allow to soak in for 1-2 minutes. Gently heat (very low) for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons St. Germain elderflower liqueur. Pour into a 8x8" baking pan, refrigerate several hours. Cut + serve. Makes 25 shots.

This is what I wore on Christmas day. I took a page from the J.Crew style handbook and mixed sequins with knits (and of course a little fur) for a festive holiday frock. I've been looking for a reasonably priced sequin skirt since last December so I was more than thrilled when I found this one at H&M.

The mister & I spent the day with my family. The present unwrapping is quite the event in our home - instead of everyone opening gifts at once we like to take turns so every gift get the attention it deserves. Per usual my brother set up his Lionel toy trains around the tree, while we watched and snacked on the generous bounty of food the my mother meticulously prepared.

This year we decided to host a Christmas Eve formal dinner for my husband's family since we would be spending Christmas Day with my family. Days before I decided I needed some new dishes for such an occasion. My other set, being white and square is only a set of 8, which is a constant annoyance to me since our table seats 10. I was craving something different so I went the complete opposite direction: black round plates with gold chargers. As soon as I started setting the table I was in love!

The chargers are from Z Gallerie and have a nice texture to them. I mixed and matched the pebble & wood grain patterns. The best part is that I got them on sale for $2 each. Yeah!

I've been obsessed with mixed metals and hot pink lately so I definitely wanted to incorporate them into the tablescape. I'm sure many of you have seen this gray & hot pink tablescape over at Bright.Bazaar. So inspiring. Anyway...my graphic starburst runner was a gift from my mother last Christmas and proved to work perfectly purely by accident. How does she always know? I guess mothers truly do know best.

I picked up these monogram coasters for free with my Kohl's cash. Even the mister got excited about these.

We did plated serving to minimize the commotion of passing at the table. We started with a crisp pink lady apple salad with celery, basil & smoked gouda drizzled with apple vinaigrette.

For the main course I made pork loin stuffed with sun-dried tomato pesto & feta cheese with a dry rub of garlic, oregano & thyme and a balsamic reduction. I served with my mother's decadent cream cheese & sour cream whipped potato recipe and a petite helping of curried asparagus.

I bet you thought I stopped getting dressed. No, just haven't been able to get the timing right since the light is no good after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. As it is I barely had enough light to shoot this today. I'd like some cheese with my whine, preferably a nice smoked gouda.

The place where I'm freelancing invited me to their holiday luncheon. It was at a posh country club and thought it appropriate that I was wearing some preppy argyle.

I recently picked up this luxurious real mink headband from Rose and Thatch. I'm very smitten with it. I felt fancy all day.

Casa holiday tour

It's time for the winter home tour. Here's the holiday mantel. I mixed it up a bit this year by adding the autumn wreath and a bit of mid-century flare with the starburst ornaments on the wall. My mom gifted me the starbursts a while back and I'm loving them in their new local.

I filled the side table lamp with ornaments. The December print is from an old typography letterpress calendar. I love recycling calendars as art.

I'm loving the trimming on the newly finished banister this year. Although I'm fairly certain I scratched the railing a bit with the garland. Perhaps I should have added a felt backing to it. Oh well, another thing to add to the list of house fixes...

The dining room fixture got a festive makeover as well.

Here's the dining room table centerpiece. The hexagon mirrors are from Ikea, starburst is from Target and the votives are from Michael's.

I decided we needed stocking this year after finding these silver glitter monograms and yes, more black snowflakes at Target. The glitter silhouette ornaments are from this etsy shop.

I kept with the same gold, rust & blue theme for the tree this year. Loving the fact that I got all my shopping done early so it's not so bare under the tree.

I went a little color crazy with the gift wrap this year - royal blue, fuschia berry, green gold, pewter & chartreuse. Pink for girls and blue for boys, more or less. I find that by making packages really beautiful it makes the whole wrapping thing less of a chore and more of a fun craft activity.

I added monograms using gold glitter glue, which at first I though was a brilliant idea because it will make it easier to find each recipient's gift under the tree until I realized we have a lot of "M"s in the mix.

I made round tags from pewter scrapbook paper. It's difficult to see but that's a wax seal with our monogram on the chartreuse raffia.

It's a shame that all this wrapping will eventually end up in the trash bin. The greeting tags are a free printable from fellow fellow. Everything else is from Michael's Crafts.

The mister & I had brunch at Habana the other weekend, then picked up the new Alfresco lounge chairs from Crate & Barrel. I finally got to putting them together last weekend and I'm so pleased with how they look with the new flagstone. I think the colors match perfectly.

We saw some heavy rain Monday & Tuesday so sadly these guys are huddled under our second floor balcony because I've had rotten luck finding covers for them yet. Sadly the $10 vinyl ones didn't last through the year so I'm thinking I may need to splurge on some higher quality ones. Crate & Barrel also sells these sage colored covers. I like that they're not black and made of polyester fabric. Any advice on durability? Feedback is much appreciated.

In other news I've picked up some more contract work. yay! Less time to spend on home projects but I certainly enjoy the work.

Christmas in New York

This is going to be one of those gratuitous picture posts. Last Saturday the Mister & I attended In-N-Out Burger's annual holiday party. It was positively the most decadent party I've ever had the pleasure of attending. The theme was Christmas in New York. As we arrived at the Disneyland Grand Ballroom we were welcomed by an archway of falling "snow".

We received this map (above). That's how massive this party was - we needed a map! Kudos to the design team - I love that they used subway signage to mark the various themed rooms & cuisine.

The main ballroom was Rockefeller Plaza and was decked out in romantic shades of black & red.

The main bar featured the statue of liberty. The next room was Central Park.

Okay, seriously these photos don't do this room justice. This snow-covered bridge complete with animated icicle lights hanging in the trees ushered us into a starlit winter wonderland...

Street lights and park benches surrounded by 14 foot gorgeously lit trees. We decided to eat in this room. We had pizza from Little Italy and pastrami sandwiches from the Carnegie Deli. And of course some yummy desserts...

I loved all the different expressions of the gingerbread men.

The next room was Coney Island. This area was so much fun!

They had carnival games, bumper cars & a photo booth. We ate hot dogs, cotton candy, candy apples & soft pretzels.

I convinced the Mister to let us host a smallish New Years Eve bash this year since we kept things super cozy last year. I decided to do another trailer invite after finding some mini disco ball ornaments at Home Goods and really I'm always looking for an excuse to make a fun video project. I built a little stage for filming, a petite theater if you will. Enjoy.

The black & white tree in my office got a mini makeover this year. I decided to incorporate a little pink and gold. With all the alternative ornament colors I've been seeing I'm still surprised that black is still so unpopular. I ended up spray painting the bulbs, then added marabou feather trim. The snow flakes are actually package tie-ons I found in the gift wrapping section at Target. Total score on the price - 4 for $1. The pink glitter bells & gold bows are from Michael's

I splurged on this $5 Eiffel Tower ornament from Pier 1 for the tree topper because it's ridiculously fabulous.

And of course no girly tree is complete without shoes! My mom gifted me this Barbie 45th anniversary ornament a couple years back. I'm glad that I finally have a way to incorporate it.

Backyard update II

The backyard is done! Well, sort of. The demo and flagstone paving is done. Really, it's still nothing pretty to look at but I thought I'd update you all anyway because it's impressive to see how much space we've got to work with now.

So...what's next you ask? Landscaping, or lack thereof. We're ripping out the remaining 2 trees in the planter beds then filling with river rocks. I'm going for a minimalist zen garden of sorts.

I also scored some amazing chairs on clearance at Crate & Barrel. Picked up 4 of the Alfresco lounge chairs in natural (left) for $60 each! Can you believe they were originally $200?! Sheesh. As you can see, they make for great fire pit seating.

Still not having much luck finding a natural gas fire pit that meets the style/budget ratio, but I'm holding out and have no plans to settle.

Tim Buron exhibit + LACMA

I'm such a bad blogger. The Mister & I went to the Tim Burton exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art almost a month ago & I'm just now getting around to sharing.

Anyway...the exhibit prohibited photography (booo!) so all I can show you is the entrance, which by itself is pretty freaking awesome. I've always been a fan of Burton's films but I had no idea he was such an accomplished artist. The collection consisted of mostly sketches but there were a few sculpture pieces as well. You really can see the evolution of his early work translating to the big screen. I think the most interesting aspect was his choice of mediums. Many times his elaborate sketches were done on nothing more than a napkin or a hotel notepad. There were also some movie props, like the Edward Scissorhands costume. Amazing stuff.

After the exhibit we wandered around for a bit. The grounds are pretty modern with a touch of whimsy.

Speaking of Edward Scissorhands...I thought this topiary stag appropriately placed outside the Burton exhibit.

Next, we ventured to the California Design exhibit. The Mister feigned interest while I squealed with delight over mid-century furniture & fashions. It was like walking through a time machine...

Backyard update

We're wrapping up week 3 of the backyard beautification project, so I thought I'd give you all an update on the progress. In my last post, the crew had already removed the wall, spa equipment and started chipping away at the spa. The day after that here's what it looked like:

As you can see the whole spa is at ground level. They also removed the faux bolders, but preserved the step up to the spa. They drilled holes in bottom of the neighboring wading pool to prevent it from lifting out of the ground (yeah, that can happen when you empty a pool and leave it that way) and filled it with the concrete from the spa demo, topped with ground soil. We waste nothing!

We took a pause here so that we at least had a clear area to entertain our Halloween guests. It was weird standing on level ground that was our spa just a week ago. I will say this- our floors were a nightmare the next morning. I had to mop them twice from the mud that resulted from spilled drinks and dirt & dust from outside.

We decided to preserve the natural gas line that ran to the spa equipment and trenched out a path to re-route it to the center of the spa. The plan is to have a raised seating area featuring a natural gas fire pit. We're not planning on having one built in, but something we can just hook up to the valve. You can see it poking out the top in the next pic.

The step from the existing patio area down into the wading pool was awkward, so we had the crew extend it into a curve. The wading pool is going to be covered with flagstone with a small border running the edge of the wall.

The flagstone should be finished by next week. I'll be posting the end result then...so stay tuned!

Halloween recap: costume time

We had a great turnout at the party this year and some fantastic costumes. I'm always amazed by how Halloween brings out the creativity in people. So fun! Here's a shot of me & my Mister. He went as Captain Malcom Reynolds from Joss Whedon's Firefly / Serenity series. For all you non-nerdy types, here's a picture of Nathan Fillion for reference:

I have to admit to having a little crush on the Captain so I was pretty thrilled when Mr. Poli said he wanted to be a space cowboy for Halloween.

For all you Dexter fans, our friend Rob came dressed in the kill suit, knife set and all! That's his wife Alicia dressed in a female take on Clockwork Orange. I might have to steal that idea for another year.

I loved the creativity of Ryan & Shari's couples costume from Up. She even made the little badges. So cute! Some of you may recall their Juno duo from last year's bash.

Halloween recap: decor

I got into the spirit a little early this year. The house has been decorated since September and I'm just now getting around to sharing it with you all. Nothing like a little procrastination. Anyway, this is the pre-party display in the living room. I found these cool old timey photos on Flickr and cleverly beheaded them in Photoshop. These were real people...they probably never dreamed their photo would be manipulated in this fashion years into the future.

I also crafted this pair of festive arrangements. The bats, raven and butterflies are from Michaels. I had the sparkle picks from last year. The little glitter pots were a great score from the Target dollar bin. For the party, I moved these to the appetizer table.

Even the lamp got a creepy makeover. haha.

We hosted the bar in the kitchen nook again this year. The half wall lends itself perfectly to the cause. I crafted some classic Martha Stewart pom poms in a desaturated black & gray palette. The spider web luminaries on the wall were another great score from the dollar bin at Target. I also splurged on a new spiderweb tablecloth from Target.

I swapped out some frames on the gallery wall in the dining room and added a couple of decorative dare I say... paper plates! Haha. What can I say, they looked cool.

And lastly, here's another last minute craft project I whipped up. I already had this Ikea shadowbox frame. I printed out this vintage clipart then added a flickering LED candle on the inside of the shadow box. The effect is a glowing creepy portrait.

DIY Coffin Menu Cards

First off, I just want to say THANK YOU for all your lovely comments on my Black Swan costume. It means the world to me. Seriously.

As I mentioned earlier our annual Halloween bash was this past weekend. What better way to start a recap than with a DIY project? I literally dreamed about these menu cards the night before the party. haha...too much Martha Stewart on the brain. Luckily I had a little time to whip these babies up before the party.

DEAD MAN'S PARTY coffin menu cards

You will need...
coffin template (download here from MediaFire)
kraft cardstock
brown dried moss
air-dry clay
toothpicks
tape
hot glue
scissors

Instructions

1. Break off a piece of clay and roll into a ball. Press down on a flat surface so that your clay ball resembles a rock. This will be your base stand for the card.

2. Shred the moss into small chunks. It will be easier to work with this way. Hot glue the moss chunks to the clay stand.

3. Prepare the menu cards.

Note: You can import the coffin template into Photoshop or any editing program to add your own custom text, or simply hand write after printed.

4. Print the coffin template on 8 1/2 x 11" cardstock, trim with scissors.

5. Tape a toothpick to the back of each trimmed coffin card. Insert into the clay base and enjoy!

*Note: The clay will harden in 2-3 days, but you can use these within 2 hours of crafting them.

This project was created using original coffin artwork from rL-Brushes Land of the Dead brush set.

Style Parade: Black Swan edition

And now...the big reveal!

For the bodice I considered using a corset but I'm on a budget (plus I like things like breathing and eating). Instead I opted for a stretchy black strapless tube variety and stitched a gather at the top to create a sweetheart neckline. I deconstructed a feather boa, then layered the feathers using hot glue and felt. Next, I applied jewels and more sparsely layered feathers.

I started with a standard costume tutu. I sewed extra wide grid tulle in gathers to the elastic waistline, then added even more feathers.

The Natalie Portman costume from the film shows her wearing the classic pale pink tights but I thought black would look better. When I spotted these ones from Urban Outfitters I knew they were perfect! I love how they reassemble ballet shoe wraps.

So there you have it.

So...the other day these 3 guys came into the backyard yesterday and did this:

One of those guys is my brother in law. We're finally getting started on the backyard beautification project. yay! I was hoping to have things wrapped up by our Halloween party this weekend but it's a no go. When my husband asked about how long, his brother replied "Two weeks" which instantly reminded me of The Money Pit. haha. Let's hope that's not the case here.

So far they've removed the retaining wall, spa equipment, jack-hammered the top layer of the spa and capped off the electrical. I'll be posting the progress so stay tuned (or whatever the blog equivalent to that is).

Hey all! You might have noticed that posting has been a bit light lately. I've been very busy working with clients & social events this month and it's getting down to crunch time. All this action hasn't left me much time for blogging, but I wanted to pop in and say hello and show you all a sneak peak of my Halloween costume make-up. This look took about 50 minutes to complete, 45 if you subtract the 5 minutes it took to clean up the oil make-up remover I accidentally sprayed over the bathroom wall...ugh.

I can't wait to show you all the rest of my costume. It's killer.

I love this old photo of us. My friend Lisa mailed it to me just after we announced our engagement. It's one of those true candid moments, caught by another. It was the night of my senior prom (1999) and my parents had just finished converting our attic into a rec room. After the dance a group of us had a little after party up there.

So it's been two years of marriage and 13 years together for us. We be celebratin' tonight with a couple of our friends at Pirate Dinner Adventure. Yes, we really are that cheesy and awesome at the same time.

Then yesterday, before I threw out a stale fortune cookie I cracked it open (because it might be bad luck or something) and I had a huge smile after reading this...

Thanks for the timely forecast fortune cookie!

So what did I do? Tape it to a card and give it to my sweetheart of course!

If you're an old school fan of The Simpsons, you probably remember The Last Temptation of Homer episode in which Homer considers cheating on Marge, especially after his fortune cookie dooms his fate "You will find happiness with a new love." Really, they just ran out of the "Stay with your wife" cookies. haha.

Becoming the Black Swan: Tiara

There are times in crafting when the smallest details are the trickiest. I must say that was the case with the tiara for my black swan costume. Honestly I could have just painted a plastic crown and called it a day but I really wanted it to look as authentic as possible.

I'm not good at starting from scratch on things, I'm much more skilled at modifying. Against my better judgement I channeled my inner 10 year old boy and decided to set a plastic crown on fire. I know, totally dangerous and hazardous. I wore a mask & rubber gloves and headed outside. I set up near the spa just in case things got out of hand and needed to chuck the tiara inferno into the water. It actually wasn't that bad - I handled with metal tongs over foil and melted sections with a tealight.

BEFORE

I was moderately happy with the melted results, but it needed a more deformed look. I came across a post somewhere in the blogosphere (sorry don't remember) about making a cheap tiara using tin foil.

A-ha moment.

As you can see I wrapped rolled tin foil around the melted tiara then affixed with hot glue.

Next I took it back outside and spray painted the whole thing matte black. I used spray paint formulated for plastic. After letting it dry for about an hour I used a combination of silver metallic craft paint and silver & black glitter glue to highlight sections of the tiara. I finished it off with some plastic jewels and here's the end result:

I'm pretty thrilled with the outcome. Not exactly like Natalie Portman's but close enough.

After watching Black Swan I instantly started scheming on how to recreate this look for Halloween. And of course I'll be sharing my progress along the way.

I found this amazing make-up tutorial on how to recreate the look. Side note: her voice is strangely soothing...I might be in a trance after watching it.

The costume would be pretty simple to recreate. It's all about starting with a basic corset & ballet skirt, then embellishing from there. Although I'm taking a more authentic approach to the costume, I was very tempted to stray after finding these...

Ouija Inspired Halloween Invitation

I had so much fun designing this year's invitation to our annual Halloween bash - everything from the wording to last minute sparks of creativity. I wanted it to look like an authentic spirit board. Luckily I was able to track down a high resolution scan of the Parker Brothers Ouija board game that I modified with custom text. I downloaded the Captain Howdy font here.

Here's a closer look of the inside wording. I blurred out our address for privacy purposes :)

You got a little sneak peak of the outside of the invite from my latest 365 post. Disney Haunted Mansion fans will surely recognize this little rhyme from the Madame Leota seance scene. Adding the kraft paper band was a total afterthought but I love how the quote works with the spirit theme.

Even Mr. Poli was impressed.

Interesting fact about me: I've never actually used a Ouija board! The closest I've gotten to communing with 'the other side' was playing 'Light as a feather, stiff as a board' at a friend's sleepover when I was 11.

Fall is here!! Yes, that statement gets two exclamation points because I am that excited. This is what I wore yesterday. I kept cozy on the couch and watched Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, at the recommendation of a friend.

I don't know what took me so long, but I finally purchased a wireless remote for my Canon Rebel. I found a great one on Amazon for $3. Such a deal and it made taking photos of myself a lot easier. Speaking of photos...I've fallen a bit behind on my 365 project. I have a couple of weeks worth that I need to upload.

Equestrian prep is definitely my favorite trend this season. I was looking for animal inspired accessories last season but had little luck. I came across this gem of a scarf at H&M and decided I needed it in both navy and copper.

I was watching the pilot episode of Ringer and to my surprise one of my favorite stars is wearing the very same SACHIN + BABI dress I wore to meet Mr. Bradley Cooper. I already felt like a million dollars in this fabulous frock, but after seeing ~~Buffy~~ I mean Ms. Gellar wear it I feel extra validation yo. Can't wait to rock this again at the mister's holiday work party in December.

Like many Target-loving fashion-minded gals I flocked to my nearest store at 10:30 this morning with high hopes of walking away with at least 1 item from the Missoni collection, only to find this. Empty shelves, sparsely stocked racks and copious displays of greed. A pair of women muscled out other shoppers toting around 3 carts loaded with multiples of literally everything in the collection. I was so disgusted. Didn't anyone teach these ladies how to share? Clearly these were fashion scalpers stocking up to make a killing on the resale. I chuckled when upon reaching the checkout line saw the women were being refused the total purchase. Apparently Target thought of this scenario and there is a 2 item maximum, like you can only buy 2 blouses or 2 pillows, etc. per day. Denied bitches! Haha...

I would have felt bad for the employees who had to put the items back, but there were customers eying the commotion, ready to pounce on the coveted cartloads. I swear, shopping is like watching Animal Planet. Very entertaining.

I didn't leave the store completely empty-handed. I bought toothpaste. So exciting, I know. When I got home I visited Target's website on the off chance that they weren't already sold out of everything. Apparently everyone else had the same idea...

Bollocks...thwarted again! I waited my turn and was pleased that not everything on my wishlist was out of stock. I ended up ordering 2 of the zig zag print bath & hand towels plus this pouf. The pouf is a bit of a splurge for me, but when you find something so perfect you just gotta go for it.

So that was my Missoni for Target adventure for the day.

I think my color palette has shifted to fall already. I'm loving the rich warm tones this season. Nutmeg & berry I'll call them. I wore this last Saturday when I visited my friend Melinda. We had lunch at the most charming crepe eatery in Redondo Beach. Their Bechamel sauce was simply divine and the wait staff spoke french. They also had this amazing french sparkling lemonade. It was so light & refreshing - a perfect offset for the rich meal.

This is leopard done right. Just a splash in the accessory department.

It's always a challenge to spruce up a space when you're a renter. My dearest friend Melinda enlisted my help on a rather awkward wall space in her apartment. Her place is very glam and refined - large plush red seating and black accent furniture. She wanted to add visual interest, but nothing too busy and nothing that required repainting.

It looks like we just painted the inset right? Nope. It's actually a foam board cut to size with velvet fabric stretched over it. I used hot glue to attach the fabric and earthquake putty to hang it on the wall. It took just an hour to finish - Not bad huh?

Halloween inspiration from Pottery Barn

It's almost September, which means we are approaching Halloween season!!! Have you seen the latest Pottery Barn catalog? Starting on page 30 they showcase their Sleepy Hollow spread. Those DIY wheels just started turning in my brain.

Inspiration

Creepy chalkboard welcome message

Table runner with creepy tree motif. This would be a super easy DIY with some burlap & craft paint.

Create headless portraits from old photographs.

This could easily be done in Photoshop using the lasso & clone stamp tools.

Paper bag luminaries are simple to make and cheap! You can print vintage images directly on paper bags using your home printer. Illuminate with flameless candles or string lights.

Make creepy signs out of balsa wood.

You can distress them with paint or stain, then write a message using a paint pen.

Remember my bleeding script candles from last year? Create a similar effect using pillar candles instead. If you can find them, how cool would it be to use old crime headlines? Like Jack the Ripper Strikes Again! Or even pages from the Obituaries. Imagine the possibilities...

Silhouette chalkboards for the hors d'oeuvre table. Clipart & adhesive chalkboard paper should do the trick here.

I hardly got dressed last week. I've been sick with a cold/cough and finally started to feel better on Saturday. After living in yoga pants all week I just wanted to get dressed up and feel normal again.

I know I shouldn't complain given all the crazy weather happening in other parts of the country, but...it's been HOT! We've had such a cool summer in So Cal that I almost forgot how miserable August can be. I turn into a cranky 2 year old when temperatures rise over 90 degrees.

I love Netflix streaming because it's 'no risk' movie watching at your fingertips. I was browsing when I came across a title that looked so bad that it might be good...Confessions of a Sorority Girl starring Jamie Luner (please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers Just the Ten of Us) & Alyssa Milano circa 1994.

Spoiled little rich girl Sabrina arrives at Sorority High with studying the last thing on her mind. Spreading malicious rumors and splitting people up are just some of the things she finds amusing. Her behavior not surprisingly though, starts to alienate her from her fellow classmates.

Tagline: They're Smart. They're Pretty. And They're All Bad! = Serious campy entertainment!

As campy as it was, I couldn't help but admire the filmic commitment to the time period. I felt like I was watching one of the 1960s beach movies with Frankie & Annette. Era intact, right down to the pastel hues of technicolor & bad bluish 'night lighting'.

Painted stripe curtains

Hanging curtains over the closet has been on my to-do list for a very long time. Like always, I can never find an in-store solution to a problem: A curtain that is long enough, stylish enough and inexpensive. DIY bloggers to the rescue! I came across 2 very helpful tutorials for making a painted Ikea curtain.

Painted Chevron Curtain from Kristen F. Davis Designs and Dwellings By DeVore's Striped Shower Curtain. Thank you ladies for sharing these tutorials, you made this DIY a breeze.

You will need...
Ikea MERETE curtains
Paint
Paint brush
Paint roller
Painters tape
Tarp or protective plastic
Yardstick
Pencil
(Optional)
Ikea VAGEN rod set for hanging
Knee pads or bath towel, rolled up

Instructions:

1. Layout your curtain over the tarp or plastic.

2. Determine your stripe width. For my curtain length I settled on 9 3/4", which yielded 5 painted stripes and 4 non-painted stripes.

3. Using a pencil & yardstick, mark lines on your curtain based on your measurements.

4. Tape over your line marks. Make sure you tape on the right side of your marks! A good tip from both ladies. I used tape markers to keep track.

5. Start painting! I edged in with a brush as Kristen suggested, then filled in with a roller. 2 coats. Another good tip - remove the tape before the paint is dry. It yields crisper lines.

6. Let dry overnight and hang. The curtains are a bit stiff at first but they soften up over time.

As you can see from this picture taken when we moved in, there was only one closet door present.

The door is still present behind the curtains. My original plan was to make it a magnetic chalkboard, but I'm finding that the magnetic part might not be an option because of the glass surface. So now I'm thinking of making it a fabric covered pin board or perhaps removing it altogether.

DIY gift wrap storage

It seems like gift wrap storage is always a chore. I remember as a child my mom performing countless reorganizations of the gift wrap closet. Ribbons & scraps of paper from last year's Christmas - bags, boxes kept for recycling. You know, you remember it too.

I was really getting tired of this problem in my own home. I realized the problem - trying to keep everything organized in a single large bin. If you shift anything (and you will, next time you wrap something) the whole thing becomes a mess. The easiest thing to do is separate the items by function:

gift bags
tissue paper
boxes
wrapping paper rolls

The first 3 are easy because they're square and flat. So I began combing the house for a wrapping paper solution. I found this popcorn tin in my husband's office from last Christmas. Perfect.

Dump the remaining stale popcorn, disinfect the inside. Pick something to cover the outside design (unless you like the wintery theme).

Some ideas...spray paint, wrapping paper, cork, fabric, chalkboard paint, or in my case, textured wallpaper. I swear, I love this wallpaper. It was only $16 at Lowes and I've used it for everything from refacing the laundry room cabinets to covering old shoe boxes for pretty storage.

Anyway...if using paper, trim it to the size of your can then attach using a bit of hot glue on the seams. An easy practical storage solution using things you already have around the house. Those are my favorite DIYs.

New window panels

I've been sprucing up my office a bit, so this week I'll be featuring a couple of the updates.

I was walking around The Container Store last Friday when I stumbled upon these decorative panels. They instantly reminded me of the Tord Bootje Until Dawn curtains.

I starting thinking...I wonder if these panels will fit the small corner windows in my office. Sure enough I had written down the window dimensions in the little notebook I like to carry around with me. And guess what? Perfect fit. I looked at the price...$10 for 4 square panels...Can I really cover 3 windows for $20?!

Yes... Just take a look.

I attached them with silver florist wire to the bottom of my existing metal blinds, completely collapsed. Although I'm thinking for a more permanent fixture I can just cut the strings on the metal blinds, removing them completely so only the top mount remains. Then reattach my panels to the top mount.

3 full-sized panels for each window was a bit too long so I cut the last one in half and trimmed around the pattern.

From runner to banner art

This $6 graphical mini runner from Target went from table to wall with a 5 minute DIY.

You will need...

Florist wire

Balsa wood strip

Cutting tool

Glue gun

Instructions

-Cut the balsa wood in two pieces using a cutting tool. I used a Jr. Hacksaw for a straight cut, but any will do.

-Wrap the florist wire along the edges of one of the wood strips. This will serve as the hanger for your banner.

-Working with one wood strip at a time, run a strip of hot glue and affix to the table runner.

-Let the glue set for a couple of minutes and hang on the wall.

I did a bit of rearranging on the gallery wall. I'm loving how the San Francisco plate & the banner art work with the Ikea alphabet print.

We spent a lot of time with my husband's family over the weekend. Saturday we had dinner with the parents & our niece Jasmine, who stayed for a sleepover. Wii danced and had a go at Wii Party, then finished the night off with a viewing of Back to the Future.

Sunday we had the rest of the family over for a barbecue. It rained that morning but cleared up in the afternoon. I tell you, California is becoming more and more tropical these days. I made the kids jump in the pool like 100 times so I could snap photos. They happily obliged.

I also had the pleasure of meeting some of my husband's family from Pennsylvania- his aunt & cousin, who sang the most amazing opera for us after dinner.
